Rickett Architects see award winning build project through to completion with Cherwell district Council and contractor Edgar Taylor.
In 2013 Cherwell district Council purchased the former Orchard Lodge care home in Warwick Road,Banbury as part of it,s Build! programme http://www.cherwell.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=9177 .The site peviously described as an “eyesore” had been unoccupied for the past eight years.
An innovative sixteen unit scheme was proposed which involved residents completing some construction work themselves in exchange for cheaper rents or house prices. As such a phased design and construction was required to facilitate collaborative end user participation.
Chris Rogers of Rickett Architects comments “this was an interesting scheme that required careful consideration of the stages of construction. Allowing residents hands on involvement with the construction of their house reinforced a sense of ownership and pride and provided an opportunity to purchase an affordable property at the height of recession”.
Working with communities to make purchasing a home easier is something that is very important to our ethos here at Ricketts. We have some more community collaborations coming soon.
